Essential Packing List
Heading to Bavarian Bliss: Christmas in Leavenworth? Awesome! But before you dive into the festivities, let’s talk packing. Winter in Leavenworth isn’t just about looking good in those holiday photos; it’s about staying cozy too.
Clothing
- Warm Clothing: Think layers! Start with a merino wool base layer – it’s a game-changer. Then pile on those sweaters, long-sleeve tops, and a fleece or two. Don’t forget a snug beanie and a scarf. You’ll thank yourself when you’re out exploring those charming streets.
- Sturdy Boots: Snowy streets are no joke. Grab a pair of waterproof boots with a good grip. Comfy boots mean you can walk longer and see more – win-win! Imagine flashing red lights over this section. I cannot emphasize how important proper footwear is, especially in negative temps. We were reminded of this the hard way when we realized our little adventurer’s snow boots were not sufficient. A cold-toed meltdown is not a good time. Luckily we were able to get her a pair of Kamik snow boots at the ski shop. I am a dedicated budget traveler. However, experience has taught us here at On the Road With Red that quality clothing and footwear is worth its weight in gold. Especially in harsh weather conditions.
- Heavy-Duty Coat: A coat that means business. Something insulated, waterproof, and with a hood.
- Gloves and Socks: Pack some thick, warm gloves and a bunch of cozy socks. Your fingers and toes will thank you.
Gear
- Camera and Extra Batteries: Leavenworth’s Christmas lights are something else. Bring a good camera to capture those magical moments. And remember extra batteries – cold weather can drain them faster.
- Sunglasses and Sunscreen: Snow reflects sunlight, and you don’t want to be squinting in all your photos. Plus, sunburns can happen even in winter. After living in Hawaii 4 years, I consider us sunscreen experts and I love Sun Bum
- Reusable Water Bottle: With all that walking and exploring, staying hydrated is key. Plus, it’s eco-friendly! Our Lifestraw Plus Collapsable water bottle is our go-to.
- Backpack or Day Bag: For carrying your essentials – water, camera, extra gloves, and maybe some holiday treats you pick up along the way. Our Pacsafe backpack is perfect for all adventures.
- Portable Charger: Your phone’s battery can die quickly in the cold. A portable charger ensures you’re always ready to snap a pic or look up a local cafe. We use this charger.
- Holiday Spirit: Okay, you can’t exactly pack this, but bring along your love for all things Christmas. Leavenworth’s festive vibes are contagious, and you’ll want to soak it all up!
There you have it – your packing list for the ultimate Christmas trip to Leavenworth. With this stuff in your suitcase, you’re all set for a comfy, cozy, and super festive holiday adventure! 🎄✨

Navigating to the Winter Wonderland
Ready for Bavarian Bliss: Christmas in Leavenworth? Great! But let’s talk about getting there safely, especially with winter’s tricky conditions. Whether you’re driving or hopping on public transport, here are some tips to make your journey smooth and enjoyable.
- For the Road-Trippers:
- Check Your Vehicle: Make sure your car is winter-ready. This means good tires, a strong battery, and all fluids topped up.
- Snow Chains: If you’re driving, have snow chains handy. Conditions can change quickly, and in some areas, they’re required by law.
- Winter Driving Kit: Pack essentials like a snow shovel, ice scraper, blankets, and some snacks and water. Better safe than sorry!
- Stay Informed: Keep an eye on the weather and road conditions. Apps and websites can be super helpful for real-time updates.
- Drive Cautiously: Winter roads can be slippery. Slow down, keep a safe distance from other cars, and avoid sudden stops or turns.
- For Public Transport Users:
- Stay Updated: Check the schedules and any travel advisories for buses or trains. Winter weather can cause delays.
- Dress Warmly: Even if you’re not driving, you’ll likely wait at stations or stops, so bundle up.
- Plan for the Unexpected: Have a backup plan in case of delays or cancellations. Know the next available bus or train times.
- Keep Your Phone Charged: Your phone is your lifeline – for updates, e-tickets, or to call for a ride. A portable charger is a must.
Expect the Unexpected
You must be prepared for the winter weather and plan for all possibilities. You might be wondering how I know this. Well, 30 minutes after our flight landed in Seattle and we got our rental vehicle, all the main roads connecting Seattle to Leavenworth closed down. When this happens there is no way to anticipate when the roads might reopen. After much discussion and looking at maps, we decided to take a mountain pass that was still open. This was supposed to make our two-hour drive become about 6 hours.
What actually happened was it took about 12 hours to make it from Seattle to Leavenworth. The roads were not good but drivable. Things got even worse as we came to a complete stop in a line of traffic. A large truck had jackknifed ahead of us. This led to over 3 hours of sitting in one spot on top of a mountain pass in near-blizzard conditions cold, tired, and over it. Once we were moving again, well into the night, it was about 30 mph max for hours after. Luckily we were prepared with water, snacks, and warm clothing.
While we were stuck, a motorist in front of us got out of his car to look at an issue with his engine. When he got out of his vehicle, his door auto-locked. Here is a super high-quality picture of my husband standing outside in well below freezing temperatures, casually discussing the situation with the man. He has all those layers I talked about, but I think he is part polar bear.
And the resolve for the lockout ended up being a busted window. A truck in front had tools and they finally just busted the window. I don’t know how far that poor man had to travel like that, but it is a reminder to always be prepared.
Remember, getting to Leavenworth is part of the adventure. With the right prep and a little patience, you’ll be sipping hot cocoa in this winter paradise before you know it! 🌨️🚗🚌🔋🧣✨

Staying in a Winter Fairytale: The 70’s House Experience
When you’re in Leavenworth for Bavarian Bliss: Christmas in Leavenworth, staying in a unique place like the ’70s House can add an extra layer of fun to your holiday adventure. It’s not your typical Bavarian-style lodging, but it’s got charm and character that you won’t forget.
- A Blast from the Past: The ’70s House, our quirky find, was like stepping into a time machine. From the shag carpets to the retro stove and baseboard heaters, everything screamed 1970s. Our kids were fascinated by the “old” stuff, especially the record player. The biggest hit? John Denver’s “Country Roads” on vinyl, which our daughter, Red, absolutely adored. Now, she’s a self-proclaimed John Denver fan, singing it all the time.
- Chilly Adventures in a Cold Spell: The house had its quirks, especially when a record-cold spell hit. It was a challenge keeping warm with the old-school wood stove, but hey, that’s part of the adventure, right? Loading firewood became a family activity – sort of like camping but in a house.
- Hot Tub Fun and Frosty Hair: The outdoor hot tub was a winner, especially against the snowy backdrop. One of our sons learned the hard way about wet hair in freezing temperatures – it turns into an icicle crown pretty quickly!
- Snowy Playgrounds and Icicle Warnings: The kids had a blast playing on the huge snow mounds outside. We had to keep an eye out for giant icicles and snow sliding off the roof – nature’s winter hazards.
- The Joy of a Local Neighborhood: Staying in a residential area was perfect. We had the Festhalle and the heart of town within a short walk, and a supermarket right across the street – super convenient. There’s something special about being in a neighborhood, living like the locals, even just for a little while.
The ’70s House wasn’t the typical Leavenworth stay, but it added a unique twist to our Christmas experience. Cozy, quirky, and a bit chilly – it was a stay we’ll talk about for years to come. And really, isn’t that what travel memories are all about? 🏠🎶❄️🔥🛀✨
